Initiated in 2006, the High Tech High Chula Vista campus master plan involved a rigorous iterative and participatory process to design an environmentally oriented charter high school and environmental research center on a challenging site with a constrained budget and a fast-track schedule.
Institutional site design goals were to create a distinct campus that fits the landscape, connect circulation and buildings with a network of open spaces, formalize individual school autonomy within the overall campus, and to expand the campus through strong visual connections to off-site open spaces within the University Park & Research Center context.
The overall design was driven by orienting and configuring buildings to maximize daylighting, optimize solar exposure, capturing prevailing breezes, and designing the Environmental Research Center, a critical component of the school, to be visible from the campus entrance.
The plan included development phasing studies that adhere to the schedule and budget and provide long-term site flexibility
